Wells Fargo Autograph Card: 3X Points on Travel and Everyday Expenses

The Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card combines travel rewards with bonus categories commonly used in everyday life.

It earns unlimited 3X points at restaurants and on eligible travel, gas stations, electric vehicle charging, transit, popular streaming services and phone plans. Eligible purchases outside those categories earn 1X point. The card has no annual fee.

Understanding the 3X categories

The Autograph card covers a broader group of bonus categories than many no-annual-fee travel cards.

Restaurant purchases can include dining in, takeout, catering and delivery when transactions are correctly coded.

Travel can include airlines, hotels, motels, vehicle rentals, cruises, travel agencies, discount travel sites, timeshares and campgrounds. This means cardholders are not necessarily limited to reservations through a single issuer portal to receive 3X points.

The gas category includes traditional gas stations and qualifying electric vehicle charging stations.

Transit can include subways, ride-sharing services, parking, tolls and other eligible local transportation expenses.

Popular streaming services and qualifying cell phone or landline plans can also earn 3X points. The issuer maintains the applicable list and merchant-coding requirements.

All eligible purchases outside these categories generally earn 1X point.

No annual fee or foreign transaction fee

Wells Fargo currently charges no annual fee for the Autograph card.

The card also has no foreign transaction fee, which means Wells Fargo does not add a percentage fee solely for converting eligible international purchases into U.S. dollars.

Other costs can still apply, including interest, late fees, cash advance fees and balance transfer fees. International merchants or ATM operators may also impose their own conversion or service charges.

Because the card operates on the Visa network, it can be used at participating Visa merchants. Acceptance is never universal, so travelers should consider carrying a backup payment method.

Redeeming Wells Fargo Rewards

Autograph points are earned through the Wells Fargo Rewards program.

Available redemption methods can include cash redemption, travel, gift cards, payment through PayPal and credits against eligible past purchases. Redemption values and minimum requirements can differ by method.

Before transferring or redeeming points, compare the value offered by each option. A gift card or merchandise redemption may provide a different value than cash or travel.

There is no published limit on the number of points that can be earned from eligible purchases. Returns, credits, cash advances, balance transfers, fees and cash-equivalent transactions generally do not earn points.

Cell phone protection

The card includes cellular telephone protection when qualifying phone bills are paid with the Autograph card.

Wells Fargo currently describes protection of up to $600 against eligible damage or theft, subject to a $25 deductible and the full benefit terms.

Coverage is not the same as unlimited phone insurance. Exclusions, claim limits, documentation requirements and maximum numbers of claims can apply.

Paying the monthly phone bill with the card may therefore produce two separate benefits: 3X points on the eligible phone-plan payment and access to the card’s cellular telephone protection.

Cardholders should review the current Guide to Benefits before relying on the protection.

Additional travel-related benefits

The Autograph card includes access to certain Visa Signature benefits and services.

Wells Fargo lists auto rental collision damage waiver, travel and emergency assistance, roadside dispatch, emergency card replacement and Visa Signature concierge services among the card’s available features.

These benefits contain important restrictions. Auto rental coverage, for example, may require the entire eligible rental to be paid with the card and the rental company’s collision coverage to be declined.

Travel and emergency assistance may help coordinate services, but the cardholder can remain responsible for the actual cost of medical care, transportation or other assistance.

Application and qualification

Applications can be submitted through the official Wells Fargo website.

Approval is subject to credit qualification. The issuer may evaluate credit history, income, existing obligations, payment behavior and other application information.

Wells Fargo also states that applicants may not qualify for another Wells Fargo consumer card if they opened a Wells Fargo-branded consumer card within the previous four months. Eligibility for introductory rates or rewards bonuses may also be limited when someone currently has, or recently had, the same card product.

The credit limit and APR are determined individually. An advertised rewards rate does not guarantee approval or a particular limit.

Who may find Autograph useful?

The card may suit consumers whose spending is spread across travel and everyday transportation rather than concentrated only on airfare or hotels.

It may be especially relevant for commuters, drivers, frequent restaurant customers, travelers, streaming subscribers and people willing to pay an eligible phone bill with the card.

Someone whose largest expenses are groceries or general retail purchases may earn mostly 1X point and could receive more value from a different everyday cash-back card.
