Capital One Savor: Cash Back on Dining, Groceries and Entertainment
The Capital One Savor Rewards card is designed for consumers who spend regularly on food, entertainment and streaming services.
It currently earns unlimited 3% cash back at eligible grocery stores and on dining, entertainment and popular streaming services. Eligible purchases outside those categories earn unlimited 1% cash back. The card has no annual fee.
How the 3% categories work
Savor’s primary advantage is its group of everyday bonus categories.
Eligible dining purchases can include restaurants, cafés, bars, lounges, fast-food businesses and bakeries. Both dine-in and takeout purchases may qualify when the merchant is correctly classified as a restaurant.
Eligible grocery stores can include supermarkets, specialty food markets, meat shops and similar merchants. However, Capital One specifically excludes superstores such as Walmart and Target from the grocery-store rewards category.
Entertainment can include qualifying purchases from movie theaters, amusement parks, tourist attractions, professional sporting events, aquariums, zoos, theatrical promoters, bowling alleys and certain ticket sellers.
Popular streaming subscriptions can also earn 3% when they are included on Capital One’s eligible-service list and processed under the appropriate merchant category.
All other eligible purchases generally earn 1% cash back.
Merchant coding can affect rewards
Credit card companies determine bonus rewards by using merchant category codes.
The business processing a purchase assigns the category. Capital One does not control the code selected by every merchant.
For example, a restaurant located inside a hotel may be coded as a hotel rather than dining. A grocery counter inside a superstore might be processed as a superstore rather than a grocery store. In either case, the transaction may not receive the expected 3% rate.
Purchases made through digital wallets, payment aggregators or third-party platforms may also be categorized differently depending on how the transaction is processed.
Cardholders should review their statements to confirm how recurring purchases are classified.
Travel rewards and international use
Savor also earns unlimited 5% cash back on eligible hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel.
The portal rate is not the same as receiving 5% on every travel expense. Flights, hotel reservations made directly with a property and other travel purchases may receive a different rewards rate.
Before making a reservation, compare the portal’s price and cancellation policy with the provider’s direct offer. Third-party bookings may also affect hotel loyalty points, status benefits or the ability to make changes directly with the property.
Capital One states that the Savor card has no foreign transaction fee. This can make it more practical for eligible purchases outside the United States, although acceptance depends on the card network and merchant.
Rewards expiration and redemption
Capital One states that Savor rewards do not expire for the life of an open account.
Cash back can generally be redeemed as a statement credit, check or toward eligible purchases, subject to the current rewards terms.
A statement credit reduces the account balance, but it may not replace the requirement to make the minimum payment shown on the statement. Cardholders should verify the payment due after redeeming rewards.
Rewards should also be evaluated against spending behavior. A person who rarely dines out, subscribes to few streaming services and buys groceries mainly at Walmart or Target may earn mostly 1%.
Checking eligibility and applying
Capital One currently identifies Savor as a card intended for excellent credit.
The issuer allows prospective applicants to check eligibility for available offers without affecting their credit score. Capital One states that this initial eligibility process may show offers in as little as 90 seconds.
Checking eligibility is not the same as receiving final approval. A formal application allows Capital One to review the applicant’s credit report, income, existing obligations and other information.
The approved credit limit, APR and account conditions depend on the applicant’s profile. No advertised feature guarantees approval or a particular limit.
Who may benefit from Savor?
Savor may be useful for people who spend a meaningful amount on:
- Restaurants and takeout;
- Eligible grocery stores;
- Movie theaters and live entertainment;
- Amusement parks and tourist attractions;
- Popular streaming subscriptions;
- Eligible Capital One Travel reservations.
Someone spending $800 per month across eligible 3% categories could earn approximately $24 in cash back for that month. Actual rewards depend on merchant coding, returns and excluded transactions.
The rewards are most valuable when the statement balance is paid in full. Carrying a balance may create interest charges that exceed the cash back earned
